Southbound with Lauren Trickett
Photos & Words by Lauren Trickett.
Southbound, where music, art and camping collides in a crazy weekend of fun.
If you prefer your music festivals to be a little more “pretty flowergirl” and little less “plastic fakery”, then Southbound is your scene.
An over 18 event where you can freely wander around with your drink in hand and check out whats on offer, with no fences or lines for the beer garden getting in the way.
The food’s great with everything ranging from Hari Krishna to Margaret River Burgers to Japanese cuisine, there is live art and sculpture installations to add to the fun, and high fives to the green team recycling incentives to keep the trash to a minimum.
Highlights this year included SBTRKT-incredible music combined with fascinating african masks; The Flaming Lips -pyrotechnics, streamers, and ten foot inflatable balls with humans in the centre; Flume-mindblowing set beyond his years, Hilltop Hoods-yes, we’ve seen them many times before, but they always have such a positive crowd reaction its hard not to smile; The Hives-true rockers with attitude and energy; and The Coconut Club-everything about this place oozes good vibes, from such a small beginning to what is now the only reason a lot of people even come to Southbound, such a big gathering of locals frothin to their fave local DJs and musos…so good! Margaret River’s Boston Switch played a pumping set at his inaugural Southbound appearance, along with LC Drums and Swami Adima providing live percussion; and the random costumes are always a highlight too…this year we spotted Crocodiles, gorillas, bears, cowboys & indians and fluro full body rashie suits. It seems anything goes at Southbound.
