One Shot – an Image and an Attitude
One Shot is a short documentary from WA film-maker Darren McCagh, that profiles world-renowned surf photographer and elements founding member, Russell Ord, in his quest to capture the ‘one shot’ that defines who he is, and not just what he does. This teaser is just the start of a documentary project that the guys will complete in 2013. If you like what you see, and you want to see more, you can support the project through crowdfunding site Pozible – One Shot.
Darren McCagh: “I’ve always been interested in what drives people to do the extraordinary things that they do. What Russell does in the water is beyond what many can conceive, and this is partly due to a lack of knowledge of what goes into these shots that he is able to get as a surf photographer. Most people have no idea the risks being taken every time he gets in the ocean, and the skill and training involved to shoot waves of consequence. I’m doing this documentary to inspire, to educate, and to explore the mentality of a true aussie character.”
Russell Ord: “I do not want to be remembered for just being in the channel at the right time and right place capturing the surfer’s wave of a lifetime. Because in the end, that’s easy. As a photographer I want to remember myself for taking that “one” photo – not because of the surfer’s name or reputation, but because of the position I put myself in to capture the moment in time. An amazing view of the ocean cannot be captured without an element of risk; It’s taken me years to find my niche within my photography, and now that I have, it’s such a great place to be.”
