He surfed Waimea Bay at 16, won four world titles, was hand picked by Pearl Jam to interview them on their last Australian tour, has 17,000 followers on Instagram and who could forget that ad for Tooheys beer? It’s Mark Richards! And this is his Long Story Short.

G’day, I’m… Mark Richards
I was born in… Newcastle, NSW
And right now… I’m still living in the same town.
I was introduced to surfing by… My parents who surfed.
And before long I was… Spending every weekend in the water (we didn’t live at the beach and I was at school).
The feeling of riding a wave is… Like nothing else I have ever experienced and I never am completely satisfied…I always want more.
For a long while competition was… A diversion from my chosen career path of shaping. I wanted to be a surfboard shaper, pro surfing got in the way for a while. Now I am back doing what I wanted to do.

Along the way, I made a lot of… Friends and I also got to surf all over the world. They are the most cherished memories I have from that time.
In 1983, I starred in a television advertisement for Tooheys beer… That was great. It came about when Austin Robertson Jr – who was managing Dennis Lillee at the time – called and said the only requirement would be to stay in Hawaii for a few weeks while they filmed for the ad, the brief was “Just go surfing”, it was a no brainer.
These days… I shape surfboards, travel as an ambassador for Quiksilver, attempt to surf every day (when my body co-operates) and hang out with my family.
I was introduced to Instagram by… My teenage son, who thought it may be a good way to showcase my shaping.
It quickly became… A bit addictive. My wife thinks I am obsessed by it.
It’s also uncovered a few… Old memories. I have enjoyed finding old photos and telling stories associated with the pictures.
My favourite Instagram accounts are…
@boskophoto… A world class local Newcastle photographer.
@mayhemb3_mattbiolos…Who has a great mix of shaping, board sprays, and pro surfing insights .
@pearljamofficial… My favourite band.
Margaret River is… Paradise… beautiful, unspoiled, great surf, awesome people. Shame its so far away!!
And one last thing… It was great to see the community support of the Margaret River PRO and the fact that the Council and Police Force turned a blind eye to some seriously dodgy parking on the busy contest days.
