Interview with a Hairdresser
Photos & Interview by Michelle Troop
A few months back, hairdresser Ed Thomas opened his own salon, Ed Scissorhands, down on Station Rd. Photographer Michelle Troop spent the day shooting and styling with him.
Do you remember when you first started thinking about a career in hairdressing?
Yes…(long pause…evil laughter) I was 17 and a career advisor did an aptitude test on me and she said “Why don’t you become a hairdresser?” So I thought, yeah that sounds right up my street. So I got a trial at a hairdressers and then got offered an apprenticeship and told my parents when they were away on holiday that I was dropping out of college and becoming a hairdresser and they said no. So I didn’t take the job and it wasn’t until I was 22 that I decided to actually become a hairdresser and do my apprenticeship…after working in a bank for 3 and a half years.
Do you have a favourite era for hair styles?
My favourite era of hairdressing is the 1940’s. I don’t do that much 40s myself although we recently did a 40s style wedding. I also love the 80s as it broke so many rules and had no limits.
Favourite female hair style?
Kate Ramsay. (Kate’s currently sitting in Ed’s salon having her hair cut and styled).
Favourite male hair style?
Nikki Sixx…Motley Crew.
One hairdressing tool you can’t live without?
If you had the opportunity to cut and style anyone’s hair, who would it be?
Can you say what style you’d give him?
Maybe a bowl haircut? hehe
How has the experience of having your own salon been so far?
It’s been very very busy. The photoshoot was a highlight. It’s been a lot of fun. We’ve been doing some promotional work…and some fun stuff to raise money for charity.
