Margaret River Surfboard Repairs’ Dutzy, sorting out board repairs for John John Florence.
Words & Photos by Lauren Trickett
It has been pretty hectic down at the NR surfboard factory lately, where a collective of shapers and artists spanning generations call home. Styles, lines, surfboard specialities and techniques vary from bay to bay, but the passion for surfing and the art of making beautiful boards is consistent throughout.
Appreciation of all the subtle curves and lines.
The boys are always busy this time of year with the locals ordering their custom winter quivers, Dutzy keeping up with repairs for the pros around town, (who else would John Florence trust to fix his dings), plus putting together the second annual FOAMLUST exhibition. Foamlust is the brainchild of Dutzy (John Dutton) and is a showcase of all things surfboard and surf related.
Superfine sanding finish.
In a technology-obsessed, consumer driven society, the romance and mystery of hand crafting a surfboard is something worth celebrating, and Foamlust is an event that will unlock some of that mystery.
Shaper Nathan Rose (NR), lost in the finer details.
There will be demonstrations from some of the best surfboard shapers in Australia, with this years event featuring a mobile shaping bay where you can get up close and personal. Shapers such as local legend Tony Hardy, Nathan Rose, Mat Manners, Marty from Delta, Jacko, Grubb, Chapster, Outer Island, Al Bean, Yahoo and Tom Hoye from Precision Equip. There’ll be a collection of vintage surfboards that tell the dreams of past years in the shaping bay, and the stories about them. There’ll be rare and interesting surfing books. There’ll be photo exhibitions from award-winning surf photographers. There’ll be surf movies showing at the cinema throughout the event, including a special screening of Alby Falzon’s Morning of the Earth. There will be rockin’ music from local band the Floozies, a licensed bar, prizes to be won including a trip to the Mentawais, and because the event will coincide with the Margaret River Pro, there may even be a few famous faces in the crowd.

Another highlight is sure to be the board swapmeet on Saturday, where everyone is welcome to bring down their boards and see what they can swap/buy/sell.
This is not JUST a surfing exhibition…..this is a surfing celebration.
