I think it’s fair to say that a glass of wine and a good book go hand in hand. Much like popcorn and a movie ticket. Which is why Writing WA and Margaret River Press have teamed with Cullen Winery to host ‘A Glass of Wine and a Good Book’.
The first Sunday of every month (Sept-Nov), Cullen offer a glass wine, and local writers, editors, and poets published through Margaret River Press, share their work.
Last month saw three of the winning entries from the Margaret River Short Story Competition read excerpts of their writing. The short story comp has been gaining in traction over the last couple of years, and this year’s publication of winning entries, ‘Knitting & other stories’, has received top picks in both the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, so it seems that emerging South West writers are getting noticed.
This Sunday November 3rd, Lynne Leonhardt will share with us her coming of age novel, ‘Finding Jasper’. Lynne is originally a Donnybrook girl, which may be the reason why she paints such a fresh image of the WA landscape in her novel. ‘Finding Jasper’, which is set in both Perth and the South West during the 50’s and 60’s, was long-listed for the Dobbie Award this year, as part of the national 2013 Kibble Literary Awards for Australian women writers.
And speaking of awards, Cullen just recently received the respected accolade of ‘Wine of the Year’ in The West Australian Wine Guide 2014 for their Diana Madeline 2011. The winery has also undergone renovations over winter, so it’s a good excuse to come and check out the revamped restaurant, have a premium quality sundowner, and mingle with some local creatives.
The event runs from 4pm-6pm in the Cullen restaurant.
